Ciena Insights Service Helps Network Operators Turn Data Into Insight, Action

By Paula Bernier - Executive Editor, TMC

Big data used to be a hot term. But when we really thought about it as an industry, we realized that big data isn’t what we really need. Or, to be more precise, it’s not the only thing we need.

So we started talking more about data analysis – or analytics. That’s a way to make sense of all the data available for our use.

In addition to big data and analytics, we need a way to make our findings more quickly understandable. That requires visibility and visualization.

But all of the above won’t amount to a hill of beans if we don’t do something with this intelligence. So we need solutions that make data and our findings based on it more actionable, as many sources now put it. And then we need to act.

Ciena Insights Service can help businesses that operate networks do all of the above. As a result, those organizations can

• attain more insight about user experiences related to their networks and services,

• get better visibility into what’s happening on and in their networks,

• have more reliable network services,

• increase resource utilization within their networks, and

• lower the risk and improve the rewards realted to their network investments.

SaaS-based Ciena Insights Service processes and analyzes telemetry data collected from diverse infrastructure sources in collaboration with Ciena’s Blue Planet platform. All this aligns with Ciena’s Adaptive Network vision.

“For our customers to extract maxiumum benefit from the Adaptive Network, they need more comprehensive visibility into their network infrastructure,” says Preshank Saxena, senior advisor services PLM at Ciena. “They need insights into the operational conditions of the network that are not only tangible but also actionable – not just metrics and data but clear indicators of ways to optimize their network health and efficiencies.”

Web-scale Networking

The idea of Web-scale IT is more than just another 'hot' buzzword or problematic disruption. What started with data center operators has become mainstream thinking in large enterprises, and it's now driving changes in service provider operations, as well. Web-scale tools that allow application development to move quickly have also created some challenges for service provider networks.
